about
Katt Hernandez, 2019
"I have been going out and recording the most everyday of
places around Stockholm since I first came here in 2008.
Recording has become a oft-time share of the constant, daily
walking through the city I live in, which I have done all of my
life. As a teenager, I slept on the streets of the city where I
grew up. As a recent arrival in Sweden, I lived in a tent with
my then-boyfriend. On the east coast, I lived in many places
that were not intended to be housing. Even though I live in an
apartment now, I still need to feel the cracks and shadows of
whatever city I dwell in, to know its streets and details on the
daily level. And I still feel a keen sense of loss when those
details are snatched away, and replaced with corporate
plastic franchises, paint-the-number condominiums and
shopping malls. This walking is an act of sisterhood to the
place where I live, memory-collecting, present seeking and
future imagining of other possible cities. I am searching for
what I've not seen, holding out for things on their way to
disappearance; for the ghosts of things that only might have
been there. Through walking as much of the city as I can
think of, I seek to be a part of the wider life of the streets,
parks, rivers, trains, shopfronts, libraries – as whole of the city
as I can be kin to – by looking to the daily sorts of things we
might take for granted. Some of these recordings I later take
as material, for making transcriptions on the violin (as if I
were learning music from a favorite record), or to build pieces
and installations. The others amass in an ever burgeoning
collection of folders on various hard drives, comprising a
folded, chaotic map of thousands of walks around the city.

what should have been originally released. the lo-fi nature works wonderfully in the record's favor... feels very natural. bailey plays off of the backing quite nicely! james
